On Empire

uncridanslarue: there should be more totalitarianism in this world, so that monumental things like this could be built. why are there no more true wonders of the world? how could we build the pyramids today?
themetrolights: hm i'm trying to think of a possible modern equivalent
themetrolights: the modern aesthetic is different, but i'm thinking of a structure built in dubai
themetrolights: i can't remember what it's called
themetrolights: or possibly whatever they're replacing the world trade center with
themetrolights: though these are just large structures, they aren't nearly as symbolic as the pyramids
uncridanslarue: I'm just saying, The Palace of the Soviets would have been the tallest structure in the world. but look how expansive that is. that could never be proposed today. certainly not "with this economy". .
themetrolights: haha do you plan on building your own palace of the soviets some day?
uncridanslarue: Probably not like that. But I want to make something memorable. which I find is hard today. I'm doing my project on albert speer and the architecture of the third reich. hilter was going to completely remake berlin into something epic and eternal. i feel like the concept of empire is gone today, and with it, memories. I want remembrance, history in these things. but the buildings today will all crumble and be completely gone, forgotten.
uncridanslarue: yes, that's my ENTJ talking..
themetrolights: hm well one could argue that the concept of an empire still exists today, at least theoretically
themetrolights: a lot of americans feel that the US is a "super power" of sorts
themetrolights: which isn't entirely the same thing, but i suppose it would be the modern equivalent
themetrolights: not that it's true
uncridanslarue: no, I'd say the concept is still there. but it just doesnt seem like there would be any physical (monumental) proof of it after, even if its influence was felt worldwide.
uncridanslarue: maybe a few in DC, but still. . there's something missing. though maybe it's a good thing.
themetrolights: well, isn't it part of democracy though? having more people to answer to? it would have to be something the entire society would want to build
themetrolights: the pyramids were built by slaves and all
uncridanslarue: exactly. which is why something like that could only be brought about by totalitarian efforts. of course I oppose them politically, but it seems like it would let free a great imagination. someone with such grand ideas and design could not do such in a democracy. though they might not have been the best - just what appealed to that one leader.
themetrolights: true, though perhaps one might be better if they concern themselves with building and expanding the theories and ideals that said structure would represent?
uncridanslarue: ha. are you saying I should stop drawing and get back to thinking?
themetrolights: haha i say do whatever you feel is right
