AGAINST THE USUAL NARRATIVE: AKA A MULTITUDE OF DECEPTIONS
Large-scale deceptions: genre issue; moral issue (can we engage with characters that abandon us so quickly after their declared love?) - Frantic
Medium-scale deceptions: obscure motivations of the characters; decisive movements of the love story are not on screen (crucially, when the story begins)
Then, what makes it so great?
Bosley Crowther: l'avventura is deliberately ... boastfully [image] obscure, Antonioni not clear in his own mind, lacks self-discipline
Not an "experimental" movie 15h37 16 févr. 2009
Visual narrative: spatial composition, meaningful 15h45 elements (dress
"not the birth of a mistaken attitude but the manner in which attitudes and feelings are misundersood today"
"the present moral standards we live by, these myths, these conventions are old and obsolete"
"a sense of pity for one another, not one of sentimentality"
- Antonioni, Cannes statement, 1960
SOCI211: Sociological Inquiry
(third time to lecture - going solely for information about thursday midterm)
I don't even think about this class. but when I look at the notes I didn't take, but steal from his lecture slides, I feel confident that it's something I can know, that the material is not so difficult
Présentation in a few hours, then studying for german, then date with Émile
Still, I don't know why I'm in this class - I'm switching out of this study, of this faculty. I'm therefore never going to be designing and conducting my own sociological experiment or survey. Really, it's all common sense. nothing I care to memorise and obsess over.
MIDTERM.
